Lilley/Faurot Residence, Oakland, CA

Retaining the original footprint and look of their 1910 bungalow dwelling was a priority for the Lilley/Faurot family.  Nestled in the Rockridge district of Oakland, a vibrant urban setting, this 1200 square foot bungalow emanated the charm that it lacked in space.  Working with Todd Jersey Architecture, the owners were able to realize their dream of a 2300 square foot two-story home with features custom designed to their specifications and needs of their family, while using green materials and approaches throughout this light-filled, calming space.

Working in harmony with the vernacular of the existing house, TJA seamlessly integrated the original craftsman style with a clean, contemporary approach while implementing green design and building practices.  By trading in the attic space for twelve foot ceilings with sky lights, the house opened up to natural light and cooling and a greater sense of space.  Natural, earthy non-toxic finishes like ceramic and stone tiles, concrete countertops, and walnut cabinetry reinforce the original craftsman aesthetic.  The kitchen design addresses the concept of reuse by employing the original white enamel and featuring the late '50's O'Keefe & Merrit stove as the centerpiece.  Outside, a dining and lounge area are complemented by gardens that feature drought-tolerant succulent plants, and a children’s play area uses recycled rubber surfacing that allows water to reach the soil.

Remodeled to meet the needs of this modern-day family while retaining the charm of the arts and crafts era, the Lilley/Faurot home is now a spacious and light-filled ode to contemporary times when a calming retreat is central to green living.
