Archway School, Berkeley, CA

This project is a hybrid private school building and church social hall (see Calvary Presbyterian Church) with a gymnasium shared by school and church. It is a complex building that integrates the needs of two user groups by giving them distinct entries and identities. The project illustrates how Todd Jersey's approach to ecological design gives rise to inspiring and affordable public buildings.

The building incorporates natural daylight for all spaces; passive solar heating; passive, natural ventilation; and radiant floor heating in all of the spacious rooms. All materials and building details are durable, nontoxic or low-toxicity, and easy to maintain. Notable features include state-of-the-art communications systems and special places for children inside and outside the building.
