Calvary Presbyterian Church This complex building houses a church social hall and a private school (see East Bay School of the Arts), with a gymnasium shared by both church and school. Our challenge was to integrate the needs of the two distinct user groups while maintaining their separate identities. The building also needed to be low in cost, environmentally sound, and inspirational to its users. The exterior of the building establishes a tranquil, uplifting mood through the harmonious use of repeating lines and curves. During a rainstorm, water cascades from the rooftops into ground-level pools, soothing the eye and ear. Inside, natural daylight floods the spacious rooms, which feature passive ventilation and solar heating supplemented by radiant floor heating. We planned special places for children both inside and outside the building, and linked the interior with a state-of-the-art communications system. All materials and finishes are nontoxic or minimally toxic and easy to maintain. |
