A second level was added to this fully remodeled bungalow in North Berkeley, and the backyard garage was torn down and replaced with an architect's studio. The site and the buildings were developed to take advantage of the sun's energy (both buildings are heated by the sun); use earth-friendly materials such as rammed earth, light straw, and clay and veneer plasters; yield an abundance of organic fruits and vegetables; and provide habitat for native plants and animals. The project is within walking distance to shops and was designed to support an environmentally friendly lifestyle.
Among the project's sustainable features are passive solar design for direct heat gain, active solar system for space heat and hot water, a wind-powered electrical generator, and certified wood used for framing, siding, flooring and trim. A cistern collects roof water for drinking, and a UV sterilizer cleans the collected water for drinking. Clerestory dormers provide good daylight distribution, with a daylight level high enough to work in the studio without artificial light, even when skies are overcast.
Outside and inside, only nontoxic paints, glues, and finishes were used. A wind-powered electrical generator supplies much of the power for the buildings, and a woodstove provides a back-up heat source. An outdoor Japanese bathtub off the master bedroom adds a touch of natural luxury.
The grounds comprise a native plant garden and a constructed wetland with native aquatic plants, a fish pond, and some native frogs that have taken up residence. A graywater system waters the garden, which includes twelve fruit trees.
