San Leandro Watershed Education Center The Friends of San Leandro Creek, a community group dedicated to protecting and enhancing a local watershed, has selected Todd Jersey Architecture to transform a 1,200-square-foot building on the creek bank into a new Watershed Education Center. The project, whose design is complete and which is expected to begin construction in 2006, will be open to the public and will deliver education programs for students, teachers, and the regional community about conserving natural resources and restoring the natural environment of the East Bay watershed. The renovated building will be built from FSC-certified wood, powered by a solar electric system, and furnished with a water cistern that collects rainwater for reuse. A Living Machine® system will treat wastewater and permit it to be reused for a number of applications. Pervious concrete pavement, which allows water to seep through into the water table, will cover the walkways. All finishes will be nontoxic and environmentally friendly. In addition, a community garden will be located on the grounds, providing organic fruits and vegetables for local residents. For updates on the project, please visit the Friends of San Leandro Creek's web site at www.fslc.org.
