Todd Jersey Architecture, Inc. and Open Door Development are teaming up with master ceramist John Toki to bring the City of Berkeley its first new coliving residential development. Coliving is an increasingly popular housing model that provides a more affordable and higher quality lifestyle over conventional housing models by designing for community collaboration. Our project will have a total of eight co-living communities (called pods), two on each of our 4 residential levels. Each pod has 14 bedroom suites. Each bedroom suite has a bathroom and some have kitchenettes. The 14 suites share a large community space with a large common space with a sizable commercial grade kitchen, large dining area and large living area along with a generous laundry room.  It’s the sharing of the common spaces including the community participation in meals that makes coliving a dynamic social living model and one that supports sharing and collaboration as the source of how coliving can provide higher quality living at lower costs. The ground level of our building has 10,000sf of commercial space that will be designed and curated for venues and businesses that support our residents and neighbors. The project will provide a shared mobility program including on site community owned vehicles and bicycles which will be collectively used by our residents and our neighbors to meet mobility needs at lower costs. The site for the project is location of the former Leslies Ceramic Supply at 1212-1214 San Pablo Avenue,   between Gilman and Harrison. This is a perfect site for a high density coliving project as it is well served by transit and within the blossoming Gilman Shopping District. It’s a site the City has long wanted to be developed for high density housing. In addition to being a socially and economically important development this project will meet or exceed the highest standards for sustainable design. Targets for sustainability will include Passive House Certification, LEED Platinum Certification, Net Zero Energy Certification
