YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PARTNERSHIP: AFFORDABLE TRANSITIONAL HOUSING

In order to provide much needed transitional housing for youth enrolled in the Youth Employment Partnership’s (YEP) job training programs, YEP engaged us to renovate and restore this 1920’s historic structure, which had undergone prior renovations, into a 30-bed dorm for young people. Historic elements retained and restored included the original clay time flooring in two entrances, a fireplace surround, an original painted ceiling in the partial third level, and the uncovering of all original wood floors. Changes included: moving the kitchen and dining areas, creating a new entry lobby area, creating smaller single and double occupancy rooms, adding a stairway and new accessible entrance, all new mechanical/electrical/plumbing systems, installation of electric baseboard heating with smart thermostats, insulating the exterior envelope with continuous insulation, elastomeric paint on the exterior as the main line of storm water defense, and much more. Overall, the all-in cost per bed was delivered at a highly efficient rate.
